"America First" versus "Americans First." Love the attention to language here. I appreciate also the tour through colonialism. The difference it seems between your gen and the neo-liberals of yore is that you see a through line where they dare not make mention of it whatsoever.

The other thing about a war is it enables you to declare a state of emergency and suspend elections.

This prefiguring of Trump suspending elections is IMO a totally ahistorical, Reich Wing idea that -- it appears -- they are spreading to inure Americans to the concept.

The United States has NEVER suspended elections because of a war. Not in WWI. Not in WWII.

Not in the CIVIL WAR. Lincoln ran for re-election in the midst of the Civil War with the continental U.S. under direct attack.

I don't think we should contribute to spreading this concept. If mentioned at all, we should state clearly that any such action would have ZERO precedent or basis.

amba's avatar

Good point—but, what has been this admin’s relationship to precedent, to date? Unprecedented. So nothing should catch us unprepared.

I don't think he'll suspend elections, but I do think he'll mess with them as much as he can. Things like banning vote-by-mail, requiring REAL ID to vote, etc. Remember how many people got caught unprepared when the deadline for REAL ID to board an airplane came around, and DMV appointments to get REAL ID were booked up months in advance? And that's just people who had to fly somewhere. Imagine how many more people would be unable to vote if that becomes law in the months before the election.

Boy Laura, this is right on the money. Why can't we get this kind of clarity out of the national media? I do have a hard time imagining the New York Times using the term 'Bumfuck Indiana" but everything you say is out there in the clear for anybody to consider, especially if you watched Stephan Miller's interview rant. This is dark stuff. There have been a couple of commentators out there reflecting on the memory loss of the generation who lived through World War II, but most baby boomers (whose father's mostly fought in it) and who played "Kill the Japs!" as kids have a fairly vivid sense of this history. A college professor whose specialty was World War Two told me that many freshman have no idea what D Day was. We may all have collective memories of Vietnam and all our various failed miltary adventures since World War II, the but sense of world collapse, of desperate chaos all over the world, the deaths of 70 to 80 million people, for most younger people might as well be about the Roman Empire. So I think a lot of the population does not see the trip wires exposed here. But great writing, please keep at it.

WTF!!? I just hope some other country had the balls to invade the White House and take all these lying ass bsturds with them - a coup is needed and now!

I remember a few years back when Candace Owens created a stir with her answer to a question at a Turning Point rally. Some audience member asked her about the stigma around the term "nationalism." And she wanted to explain that "nationalism" is fine. She decided to use Hitler as an example and explained that Hitler was all well and good to the extent that he wanted to make Germany great, and that was "nationalism" but when he decided to invade other countries, that was "globalism" and that was bad.

She caught flack for sounding like she was minimizing the evil of the Nazi regime (deservedly so), but I was struck by her painfully stupid and simplistic notion of "nationalism" and "globalism." And now, Trump has gone bad even according to her view of history, because he's inflicting his will on other countries and that's "globalism" and that's bad, see?

America First dates back to the reelection of Woodrow Wilson, who won in 1916 because "kept us out of the war." Except then he plunged us into war, criminalized dissent, and fomented paranoia about foreigners that led to the rise of the second KKK in the 1920s.

Is it “America” or is it capitalism that is in the final cancerous sprint to oblivion?

The facts on the Venezuelan ground do not bother Trump. War, civil or otherwise, contained within its borders will be vigorously embraced or utterly denied by him, depending on what he thinks is the better play. His supporters will follow him no matter the message, and in reality, unless they have kin on the ground, they do not care about Venezuela anyway.

Ms. Jedeed,

You not only deserve the by-line credit for this report and analysis. You also deserve a translator credit for rendering into Amurikin English the layers of Trump\Rubio\State Dept Speak that illustrates the lies and internal contradictions of the official documentary trail of this Smash, Jam & Depose mission into our "Sphere of Influence".

From the album “Prime Time”, originally released in 1977

℗ 1997 Don McLean's Benny Bird Company Inc.

"Don McLean is a Grammy award honoree, a Songwriter Hall of Fame member, a BBC Lifetime Achievement award recipient, and his smash hit “American Pie” resides in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry and was named by the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) a top 5 song of the 20th Century."

Less suited was the latter for circa 1970's broadcast and nearly as off-screen, off-radio waves & off-the-US-cultural radar and Defense Department (Trump changed the name to Dept of War) as "American Pie" suburban NYC artist McLean's only-too-prescient bit of Media Crit (perhaps a titch less quantified than standard Noam Chomsky Public Speaking or MIT teaching curriculum...):

Chorus]

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' the American way

[Verse 1]

I was ridin' on the subway in the afternoon

I saw some kids a-beatin' out a funky tune

The lady right in front of me was old and brown

The kids began to push her, they knocked her down

I tried to help her out but there was just no way

A life ain't worth a damn on the street today

I passed the ambulance and the camera crews

I saw the instant replay on the evening news

[Chorus]

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' the American way

[Verse 2]

Well, will you take the car, will you take the trip?

Remove annoying hair from your upper lip

What's it really worth? Does she really care?

What's the best shampoo that I can use on my hair?

Hey, what's the real future of democracy?

How we're gonna streamline the bureaucracy?

Hey, hey, the cost of life has gone sky-high

Does the deodorant I'm using really keep me dry?

[Verse 3]

Well, spin the magic wheel, try to break the bank

Think about your life when you fill in the blank

Here's a game that's real if you wanna try

One spot on the wheel that says you must die

American roulette is the game we play

But no one wants to have to be the one to pay

You get to pass "GO", you get to pass away

But before we start the show, here's our sponsor to say

[Chorus]

"Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' the American way"

[Verse 4]

Well, down in Mexico, the laundry's on the line

There's where you can go if you land on the nine

Canada is nice if you're fond of ice

If you land on the two, then we'll send you there twice

We interrupt this game for a news release

A man has gone insane and been killed by police

Now, back to the game, that's a dangerous play

'Cause if they see you in C-U-B-A you must pass away

[Chorus]

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' the American way

[Verse 5]

My supper's on the stove, the war is on the screen

Pass the bread and butter while I watch the marine

The shot him in the chest, pass the chicken breast

The general is saying that he's still unimpressed

"We had to burn the city 'cause they wouldn't agree

That things go better with democracy"

The weather will be fair, forget the ozone layer

But strontium showers will be here and there

[Chorus]

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' the American way

[Verse 6]

Well, livin' in the country, watchin' shadows fall

My reception ain't too good in a crowded stall

Bombers in the air, missiles in the sea

Chemicals in everything including me

They don't keep their promise in the Promised Land

It's getting mighty hard to find an honest man

But coming very soon, a show you'll die to see

It's called "The End of the World", on channel "C"

[Chorus]

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' in the U. S. A

Well, this is life, this is Prime Time

This is livin' the American way

No folks and dear readers, we do presume that neither you nor we could make this stuff up!

Perhaps only Robert Downey, Sr could be capable of that as his mind and underground film direction and production of PUTNEY SWOPE demonstrated in the very different year of 1969:

This is as much about kicking China and Russia out of the Americas as it is about oil. Venezuela produces less than 1% of the world’s crude, billions are needed to bring production up. US oil companies, especially the ones who have been nationalized in the past, have no stomach for a long term return. Half of the floors of Venezuela’s state run oil company are occupied by Rosneft, a Russian oil company. China has made large investments, to be paid by the oil they might now not get. China lost major face. Ten, twelve years ago the U.S. was the largest trading partner of almost all of the countries in the America’s. Now it is China. This is 19th century Great Power conflict in its modern form. Human nature and politics don’t change, our tech just gets better.

Great job pulling the threads together. Colonialism 2.0 comes across as a mob protection racket. That fits with Trump's overall outlook on the world. Pretty grim.

On a lighter note, the situation reminded me of the Star Trek TOS episode, "A Piece of the Action."

On point with great writing, great analysis, and insight as always. I live a somewhat weird triple life of being a psychotherapist, democracy researcher, and pastor so I sent this to my colleagues in all three areas that I know appreciate this kind of brilliance. Thanks for all you do. I hope you get a zillion paid subscribers.
