Much of what you wrote I fully agree with…. this I don’t…. “These proceedings must lead to legal action against Trump and the loyalists who attempted to help him; not censures or fines or show trials but treason charges and hard time.” If that happens, the guns come out; and all that the Wing Nuts believe, will be in their minds, confirmed. Why it won’t happen is that by November the Republicans will control Congress and the Biden “Crime” Family Soviet style trial will be in the offing. Impeachment to likely follow.
The sole aim now is to work to make certain that Trump is not re-elected. A strong Democratic candidate can do that. Joe can’t run again. Harris can’t win…..and for God’s sake please drown any suggestion of the resurrection of Dame Hillary the Shrill. I have a wooden stake for loan.
Trump is a Huey Long writ large. No heir apparent. Stop him this time and the Republic will muddle on.
Glad to hear you had a chance to come back to PDX. I do miss your local takes……
I don't understand, how if the crimanality of Trump-world loyalists was so egregious, "dreadfully illegall" as you say, why's its been so hard apparently for smart and resourceful prosecutors to produce the evidence needed to put away the guilty for along time. They break the spirit of law, but skirt the letter.
Perhaps a massive set of charges is coming... but the bar for treason is high. For treason to be a charge, the Vanilla ISIS army, who may have had some weapons, but not more than the average Texas church service, would need to be creadible. They took selfies and beat up cops. They were not there to take on the National Guard or Army Infantry, but just to vent and distract and be useful idiots. Aaron Burr had enlisted men and stashed weapons on Blennerhassett Island, and still got off of a treason charge, which mostly makes me feel like we missed an oppurtunity for a pistol duel between Biden and Trump.
The costs of subverting an election are definitely not high enough, but they still need the cover of rules not lose too many people and create more Liz Cheney's. The lesson seems to be to just bare knuckle the democratic whimps, legally set up rules that favor them by legally buying the politicians they need, to get the duly appointed judges they need, to uphold the rules that favor a mulit-generational minority rule by Reich wing of the Republican Party. The legality of it all is actually the most disgusting part to me. A 6-3 judiary, appointed by a candidate who lost the popular vote, approved by chamber representing a minority of citizens, will rule on case whether the least populous areas of less populous states should have an even more outsized voice in federal elections.
"Trump then mounted a pressure campaign against Pence that culminated in the VP’s refusal to get into a secret service car **for fear of his own safety** as J6 erupted aboveground"
Probably a wise choice between the written and the podcast, but its not like you to hold back much... which, in and of itself, makes me a little quesy about where we are.
Excellent analysis. I couldn't agree more.

Happy 4th, btw
You pulled a punch...
