Ah Sears... I grew up in a VERY small town, but in the late 70s we had a Sears "catalog store". They had no inventory, but you would pick your product from the catalog and they would ship it to the store for free, long before internet business made quick and inexpensive shipping so prevalent. By the mid 80s, I remember most big ticket shopping for my family and most of my peers switched to _THE_ Costco. The first one in the area (their second location overall) was about 50 miles away, but everyone went there. Interestingly, that Costco is still there, though it has a lot of siblings these days. Certainly not as long a history as Sears, but the fact that their brick and mortar stores are still thriving shows that Sears could have survived with proper management.

Oh my Dog. I had not read this. I've been calling America, "Corporation America", since I saw the sign outside my JHS, with the school name and events, lit up by "sponsored by Pepsi", and then, learned that parents could save time, by buying white bread crustless PB&J freezer sandwiches. WTF??

Lately, some of my leftist friends, have actually defended buying these sandwiches.

Anyway, sorry for the yap, I just walked through memories with every sentence you wrote (for me, from the late 70s, until this moment). Damn woman, you are a talented writer, who sees the world a lot like I do (but with words, even I have to look up sometimes), that's why the Happy Monday People have always found me off-putting. We need writers like you Laura.
