As for low engagement on Mastodon... yeah, I'm getting bored without the death threats, transmisogyny and weird conspiracy theories about Jewish people actually being the architects of the holocaust (still my favorite bit of batshittery). Every fresh round of bans brings a few more good follows over though. I don't know if it will actually work as the successor to twitter, but I'm hopeful. The idea of a major social media outlet being open source and independently hosted on distributed servers is amazing. I think it would be better for everyone in the long run.

It’s been an interesting week for the free speech absolutists. We learned they are nothing of the sort, as they silently or gleefully watch the banning of journalists and anyone who makes Musk big mad.
Certainly the former team at twitter struggled with how to manage hate speech and conspiracy theories and an actual insurrection. But, at least they had a clear idea of what was a reason for a ban.
They weren’t banning conservatives arbitrary, just the ones engaged in hate speech. A fact lost on the MAGA crowd.
Twitter probably struck out many times, but at least it was a team of individuals and not a billionaire with an agenda.
I don’t know how Twitter remains profitable if musk embraces the swamp. I also worry that running off leftists and those squeamish with hate, creates a situation where their voices are throttled when it matters the most. A billionaire driving off those with ideas not aligned with his vision of society is scary. But how do normal people survive a cesspool.
