I hope that this streisands all in their faces and that Substack is elevated by these ridiculous attacks... he truly has shown his hand, and certainly hastened my migration here. so glad to have found you before i left!

I really think it might--it's made Substack into a news story and people are bound to wonder whether Musk's extreme reaction stems from Notes being unusually good. This jerk has limited access to platforms before but never with this much vitriol

Glad you're here!

Arguably what makes a social media site take off in the beginning is the network effect- as more people join the service, the value of the service increases. I also guess, for most people, there are two "networks" that twitter offers that provide value. The first is near-real time exposure to celebrities, influencers, etc... Substack won't replace this probably unless they do something like pair up with Meta or something to loop in Instagram or Tik Tok. Which is incidentally the 4th herald of the apocalypse.

The second is access to journalists and media and their ongoing churn of discussion. And Substack, if it pulls Notes off well, could 100% manage to poach enough journalism and media from Twitter to start a network effect. The more Musk thrashes around the lower the cost of leaving the Twitter ecosystem and the more opportunity other products have of reaching the critical mass.

There's a few other use cases for Twitter, academic, screaming into the void, becoming or ridiculing the main character of the internet, etc... But for the average person, I'd argue that access to celebrities and access to the flow of media conversation are the two big tent poles of Twitter's value.

Substack notes won't ever replace twitter fully. The interesting thing about Twitter was the almost brownian motion that would set up, ripple through the ecosystem, and quickly be replaced by another systemic, momentary shock because it's barrier to entry was almost as low as possible. I think honestly only Tik Tok's barrier to entry was lower. Tying notes to this whole article/blogging system will take some of that chaos away. That might help media and journalism to be honest.

Your moral philosophy is probably closer to liberal Judaism than you realize. Heavy emphasis on justice in this world. The world to come will take care of itself. Belief in God suggested, but not required. Not saying you should become Jewish, but you should read Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg, another great writer I found on Twitter. https://substack.com/profile/553625-rabbi-danya-ruttenberg

You're not the first person to say this to me, and I should really look into it more. Have subscribed, looking forward to it

I second this. You (online persona) sound very much like my first wife and she converted to Judaism as an adult and it seems to suit her well.

Your sense of humor is "zick, zick, zick" and I like it very much. We're either laughin or cryin and I prefer the former. And f**k neutral

Keep it up kiddo!

There's also Substack Notes but yeah basically.........I feel a bit like a social media amputee. Rough

I thought of trying to sell you on Mastodon but, beyond the geekiness, the social conventions would sedate you. My imaginary-Laura (iLaura) is Left by way of reason and experience but her heart is drawn Rightwards; she needs to engage with the enemy. You can't engage with the enemy on Mastodon.

I hope Substack Notes succeeds, but I wonder if there will every again be something like pre-Musk Twitter.

Laura Jedeed's avatar

You've nailed it. I've poked around Mastodon and it's all very...well. Echo-chambery. And stultifying. And full of the various genres of pseudoleftists and leftists that does not care for me at all. Twiter was a gladiator pit and I already miss it a lot

End of an era. I hope something emerges that has some of the same attributes, even if it never looks or feels quite the same as the bird did.

Ugh.. ok ok ok I’ll reply guy here.. whatever 😂

Glad to find something where interaction is based on interesting content instead of its ability to piss me off.

FB became a joke for finding news and, I feel, Twitter will follow right behind them. Only the woooorst will pay to promote their content there.

All things seem to devolve into spectacle eventually but I like the idea of a social media platform with a blog platform attached to it--same house, not the same room. Who knows whether they can pull it off but I have vague hopes that the format might lend itself to a less vicious environment (while still being fun)

Hopefully we find out soon

I legitimately feel the whole of twitter is to deliver relevancy, attention, and adoration to Elon Musk now. It is operating on a values system that doesn't work like traditional corporations, like tech companies, or even social media companies. If you throw out what Musk says he's trying to do and look at what he is doing, it all points in the same direction- it's incredibly consistent. And Twitter will continue morphing into a more and more alien version of what it used to be as long as he's in charge.

Welcome to Substack. I think you'll do well here. It does suck that Twitter has crashed and burned so hard.
