I wish we did live in this better world which seems to be only a few degrees of social engagement away from our current one. I loved the part about ProtServe when they ask for a mediator instead of "the enforcers". How many people would still be alive if we deescaleted instead of drawing a gun or taser with a dusturbed person? A well written explanation of why we shouldn't tolerate the "my rights are sacrosanct but yours are at my duscretion" crowd. because when we do we find ourselves facing blatant fascism and social unrest AGAIN as if whole generations didn't try to rid the world of it over most of the 20th century. I for one am impressed Lady bc up to today I had only seen your journalistic efforts. Turns out you are a pretty good writer as well. More of this would be appreciated if you want to branch out so to speak!
You have the chain of thought down precisely. It amounts to “the sincerity of my beliefs” insulates me from any criticism or blowback. But the sincerity of anyone else’s beliefs doesn’t insulate them.
I don't know if you read Roy Edroso, but he asked for subscriber input right after you published "God Damn It, Substack". Short version of my response was that legitimizing nazis by cohabiting with them would be a deal breaker for me and a referral to your post. The first steps toward the utopian world that you describe is to deny them legitimacy by any means, whether mockery, ostracism or whatever else you can come up with. Argument is right out as it confers legitimacy.
Brilliantly done. I only wish it were longer. There is a tiny, contradictory part of my brain thinking, "yeah, if we're going to support tolerance of all of the populations this fictitious Nazi was screaming about, why not support tolerance of Nazis?" Very quickly I had my answer: BECAUSE THEY'RE NAZIS. I am an absolute liberal but I like to turn things around backwards sometimes just to consider ... but BECAUSE THEY'RE NAZIS is enough of a counter-argument for me. Even TO me, to my weird little brain part that tries to see some kind of good in everything. Nope. Not in Nazis. Yeah, great. My mind re the suppression of 'Nazi' speech was totally changed by the above high-school essay. No offense to high school level essays. You live in a country that, as I write this, is bombing several 'brown' countries such as, e g. Syria, Yemen, Iraq. Is waging a proxy war SUPPORTING ACTUAL Nazis in Ukraine and is threatening/sanctioning numerous other 'non-white' sovereign countries; is instrumental in the current genocide in Gaza (according to South Africa). Sorry, but the mention of the word 'swatika' is less shocking than you might expect given that the Taxes you pay go to Nazi action, but minus any swastikas. Disapointed.
As usual, you have spectacularly missed the point. My opposition to the ethnic cleansing in Gaza is well documented and stringent, and if you think that my problem with Naziism is that it's "shocking" you're frankly not worth engaging with.
