I can't speak for others, and I don't think it even applies to me because I can't pay you yet, but I felt nothing but excited relief reading there'd be an AMA rather than discord action. Probably depends on the median age of your subscribers and I'm not hating on discord exactly, it's just very much not intuitive for me to use and so I don't unless I absolutely must.
I think your milestone is a good indicator that you aren't alienating many readers because of lack of discord engagement. Congratulations! Love to see writers I admire getting closer to stability from their hard work.

An excellent article and I don't disagree with any of it. As you may know, I left Substack in January 2024, when we first learned they were allowing Nazis to monetize. My hope was that if enough of us did that, Substack would either change their policies and lose critical mass
Unfortunately, things didn't work out that way. After several months of almost completely stalled growth and battling Beehiiv's unbelievably bad, buggy intrface, I came back. It wasn't a decision I made lightly and I understand that people would be upset for understandable reasons, but I didn't see any other way to make this work. Ultimately, it seemed like I was doing a LOT more damage to myself than I was doing to Substack
The capture thing is a huge danger, I do backups every week and anticipate losing this platform eventually. When that happens, a lot of other people will also lose this platform and I think the self-publishing environment will be very different, kind of like how Bluesky only came into its own after the election.
And my god -- the newsletter fatigue is so real. If I ever manage to get a staff job this whole thing is getting demonetized and will turn into an archive. Here's hoping someday
