I agree that Vivek is the closest to getting the vibe of a Trump event, which is basically bigot fascist Rocky Horror midnight madness. He won't be VP most likely- Trump doesn't want a strong opinionated VP who could in theory refuse to accept fake electors or impede his unbridled desires, but he also doesn't want too much of a bootlicker like DeSantis was (DeSantis as VP would basically cost the GOP the presidency legally so it's a non-starter) because DeSantis ended up being a backstabber after riding Trump's coattails in about the most explicit way imaginable.
But I think Vivek's shortcomings are tactical more than strategic. He "gets" that Trumpers just wanna fucking party. But he's an Indian, his name is funky, and he's a Hindu. He also actually has policy he wants to achieve and like you said, nobody cares about that. I don't think you can just bulldoze through the GOP bigotry at this point. But I consider him dangerous in 2028. Vivek Ramaswamy may turn off some of the more good ol' boys of the Grand Ol' Party, but Vik Ramsay, recently baptized (And I'm talking BJ from The Righteous Gemstones levels of ostentatious) as an evangelical is *almost* there I think.
As for DeSantis, the man feels like that little alien in MIB sitting in a human shaped robot pulling levers. It's so obvious someone heckled him at the Iowa state fair by flying an airplane banner over the event saying "Be Likable, Ron!"
His fall has been interesting. He *gets* that part of Trumpism is "hurting the right people" but he doesn't get that Trumpers want to *enjoy* hurting those people. Trump gives them that first and foremost in his cavorting, but DeSantis makes being a bully feel like homework. He wants to be the *only* person enjoying hurting people, and that makes him a non-starter.
Chapo keeps saying that his anti-woke crusade only has legs for so long because even among the GOP, the average person doesn't want to spend this much time thinking about the genetalia of children. It's fascinating that Vivek, the other candidate who started his campaign as an "anti-woke" crusader, has moved away from it and moved just towards bombastic. I think intellectually DeSantis knows that this is not a winning campaign plank, but was hoping to carry him farther in the primaries before it sputtered out, so he could gather momentum and then run on that when people realized that organizing an entire state government around the physical inspection of childrens' genitals is actually really fucking creepy.
Pence has nothing to lose. He won't get the nomination, these people wanted to literally fucking hang him 2 years ago. He should enjoy eating his oversized corn dogs and really enjoying the butter sculptures and like... I don't know sell Pence 2024 nooses or something.
Ultimately I don't blame you for enjoying the shit out of the debate, it's probably one of the lowest-stakes political events of the last 8 years or so. I guess there's a non-zero chance that Trump isn't the nominee, but it won't be due to the GOP primary process. He literally has to drop dead for any of these people to stand a chance.

GOP outside of Trump is caught in a rock and a hard place. Trump has enough momentum to just kind of not really engage with the abortion debate, but the rest of the party kind of needs those psychopaths to maintain support, even realizing that it's *super* unpopular in more general elections.
Chapo was talking on their last episode that they see that most of the horror stories about abortion seem to be coming *from* the GOP. I don't pay enough attention to online GOP discourse to concur, but if it's true it's fascinating in a terrible way.
Seriously, the only way I see this incarnation of the Republicans holding political power, let alone gaining on it, is to fuck with voting and districting even harder than they have been. The driving forces of their party are unpopular among enough Republicans that it seems like a struggle for them to get aligned. I mean, they will, they still have a lot of resources and momentum, but it's not going to get easier the longer they're on this road. In the past, the Republicans would bend the electorate to their party planks with time and persistence (It's actually the one thing I kind of wished the Democrats did a little more of), but that I think is actually a bygone era. They're a largely meme-driven party now so the discipline and the patience to channel their base into directions they want seems to either be abandoned or not as effective any more. The base is driving the party it seems like, and the base is being driven by shitty political influencers. The party apparatus is out in front of the mob pretending to be the parade leader, when they're really just looking over their shoulder to anticipate which way the mob will go. Trump fits into this model well because at the end of the day he doesn't really have policy goals, he's there to feel adored and strong.
